Wilmington Chapter Of PFLAG Announces Scholarship Winners For 2014

PFLAG Wilmington Northern Delaware has announced the winners of their 2014 Scholarship Program. Patrick Bova (Unionville High School – Kennett Square, PA) and Logan Castrucci (West Chester East High School – West Chester, PA) will receive scholarships to their chosen schools.  PFLAG is Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Bova will be attending New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and Castrucci will be attending the University of Pennsylvania.  Both individuals provided support to the LGBT community during high school by serving two years as president of their school’s GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance), while spearheading multiple initiatives to engender support for the LGBT community. Both have stellar academic records.  PFLAG wishes Bova and Casstrucci all the best in their university efforts and would like to again thank the local merchants and individuals who contributed to PFLAG Wilmington Northern Delaware’s 20th Anniversary Silent Auction to make these scholarships possible.  Anyone interested in providing funding for our scholarship program may contact us at 302-654-2995, or write to us at P.O. Box 26049, Wilmington DE 19899.  You may also email us at pflagwilmde@att.net, or our scholarship chairman, Jim Bianchetta at bianchetta@aol.com.

Yes there will be a Pride Festival this year

Photo: Greetings, Delaware! On behalf of the elected Board of Directors of the 2014 Delaware Pride Festival, our festival committee and our dedicated volunteers, we would like to take this opportunity to officially announce the 2014 Delaware Pride Festival. This year’s festival will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014, from 11AM – 5PM in our state capitol, Dover, Delaware, in front of the Historic Legislative Hall. The Delaware Pride Festival has become the largest GLBT Event in Delaware and this will be the first time since Delaware Pride was formed that the festival will be held in Kent County. In 2013 we saw historic achievements within Delaware with the passing of the Same-Sex Marriage Bill & the passing of the Transgender Nondiscrimination Law. What better way to celebrate then to hold our 2014 Festival in our states capital where it all happened, and we are tremendously excited about this year’s event. This year’s Pride theme is, Reflections of Pride – Stonewall 45 …… To observe the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and reflect on the impact the fight for equality is having on the LGBT community around the world. The Stonewall Riots in New York’s Greenwich Village on June 28, 1969 set off the LGBT civil rights movement. This year’s event will be hosted by Miss Reading Pride Celebration 2013 ~ Gracie Freebush, with performances by Miss Delaware Pride 2013 ~ Ivy Profen. The entertainment line-up will be coming out soon so keep an eye out on our website, Facebook and Twitter. Thank you again to everyone who has helped out as a volunteer or attended one of our many meetings this year, as well as those who have attended our various events or helped out at one of our Pride Gives Back events. Without your help we wouldn’t have been able to make this happen. If you are interested in being a Sponsor, Vendor or an Entertainer please visit our website at Delawarepride.org Sincerely, Board of Directors Delaware Pride, Inc. www.delawarepride.org

Keep up to date with the entertainment lineup or to be a vendor or to get involved in anyway....click on the Delaware Pride link in the Highlights section below left.  This is the first time ever the festival will be in Dover.  See you there!

Big Brothers & Big Sisters Now Has A Mentoring

Program for LGBT Youth

Did you know that 7.5% of Delaware youth identify as LGBTQ? Most don’t have someone they feel comfortable talking to about the important things going on in their lives, but Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware with the United Way of Delaware want to change that. With Big Brothers Big Sisters, we aim to match LGBTQ youth with an LGBTQ or allied adult, someone who they can talk to and trust. Do you know an adult or youth who would benefit from our program? Contact Big Brothers Big Sisters today. For info call Colleen Dougherty,Big Brother Big Sisters of DE, LGBTQ Mentor Case Manager,                  (302) 998-3577, cdougherty@bbbsde.org
